Introduction
Laser cleaning and laser welding systems are powerful industrial tools capable of improving productivity while reducing consumable waste and manual labor. These systems also present significant hazards if operated improperly.
This Laser Safety Notice is intended to provide general educational information regarding safe operation, personal protective equipment (PPE), workplace preparation, and best practices. It is not a substitute for operator training, manufacturer documentation, or applicable safety regulations.
Always read and follow the operating manuals provided with your equipment.
1. Class 4 Laser Systems
Most industrial laser cleaning and laser welding systems sold by LSI Industrial are classified as Class 4 laser products, the highest laser hazard classification.
Class 4 lasers are capable of causing:
• Permanent eye injury
• Skin burns
• Fire
• Ignition of combustible materials
• Hazardous reflected laser beams
• Hazardous airborne contaminants during material processing
These systems must only be operated by trained personnel.
2. General Laser Safety Principles
Operators should always:
• Read manufacturer documentation before operation.
• Follow all operating procedures.
• Keep unauthorized personnel away from the work area.
• Never bypass safety interlocks.
• Never intentionally expose people to the laser beam.
• Never operate damaged equipment.
• Stop operation immediately if abnormal conditions occur.
3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Appropriate PPE depends on the application and materials being processed.
Typical PPE may include:
• Laser safety eyewear appropriate for the specific laser wavelength
• Safety glasses with side shields (when appropriate)
• Flame-resistant clothing when necessary
• Heat-resistant gloves
• Hearing protection when required
• Safety footwear
• Respiratory protection when hazardous fumes or particulates may be generated
PPE should always comply with applicable workplace safety requirements.
4. Laser Safety Eyewear
Laser safety eyewear is one of the most critical protective devices.
Operators should ensure:
• Eyewear matches the laser wavelength.
• Eyewear provides the appropriate Optical Density (OD) recommended by the equipment manufacturer.
• Lenses are clean and undamaged.
• Eyewear fits properly.
• All personnel within the controlled work area wear appropriate protection.
Never substitute standard safety glasses for laser safety eyewear.
5. Pulse vs. Continuous Wave (CW) Lasers
Although both require strict safety practices, pulse and continuous wave lasers present different operational considerations.
PULSE LASERS
Commonly used for:
• Rust removal
• Paint removal
• Oxidation removal
• Mold cleaning
• Delicate surface preparation
Primary hazards include:
• Reflected laser energy
• Surface debris
• Vaporized coatings
• Airborne particulates
CONTINUOUS WAVE (CW) LASERS
Commonly used for:
• Heavy rust removal
• Weld cleaning
• Laser welding
• Surface preparation
Additional considerations include:
• Greater heat generation
• Increased fire risk
• Hot workpiece surfaces
• Higher thermal exposure
6. Beam Hazards & Reflections
Never assume the laser beam stops where it contacts the workpiece.
Hazards include:
• Direct beam exposure
• Specular reflections from polished metals
• Reflections from mirrors, glass, or chrome
• Unexpected beam paths
Remove unnecessary reflective objects from the work area whenever possible.
7. Fire Prevention
Laser systems generate significant heat.
Before operating:
• Remove combustible materials from the work area.
• Keep a suitable fire extinguisher readily available.
• Monitor hot workpieces after processing.
• Never leave operating equipment unattended.
• Follow applicable hot work procedures when required.
8. Ventilation & Fume Extraction
Laser processing may generate:
• Metal fumes
• Paint vapors
• Smoke
• Dust
• Airborne particulates
Proper ventilation or local fume extraction should be used whenever required.
Ventilation requirements depend upon the material being processed and applicable workplace regulations.
9. Cleaning Hazardous Materials
Certain materials require additional precautions.
PAINTED SURFACES
Older paints may contain hazardous substances.
Ensure appropriate ventilation and respiratory protection.
GALVANIZED STEEL
Processing galvanized steel may generate zinc oxide fumes.
Appropriate ventilation and respiratory protection, such as a properly fitted P100 respirator when suitable for the exposure and workplace hazard assessment, may be necessary in addition to engineering controls.
UNKNOWN COATINGS
Never assume coatings are safe.
Unknown paints, primers, coatings, adhesives, or residues may release hazardous contaminants when processed.
When material composition is unknown, obtain appropriate information before proceeding.
OILS, GREASE & INDUSTRIAL RESIDUES
Some residues may produce smoke, vapors, or hazardous decomposition products.
Ensure adequate ventilation before processing contaminated surfaces.

Always verify actual material composition and applicable OSHA/EPA regulations before processing.
Note on Painted & Coated Materials: Some industrial coatings may contain hazardous substances, including lead, chromium, or other regulated materials. When coating composition is unknown, have the material evaluated before processing.
11. Materials Not Recommended for Processing
The following materials should not be processed without proper professional evaluation and controls:

• Asbestos-containing materials — Extremely hazardous; requires specialized industrial hygiene expertise
• Lead-containing coatings — High toxicity hazard; requires specialized respiratory protection and containment
• Radioactive materials — Contact appropriate regulatory authority
• Explosive or flammable atmospheres — Consult safety professional
• Unknown coatings or compositions — Always determine material composition first
• Materials in explosive dust atmospheres — Laser operation may create ignition source
• Hazardous waste or contaminated substrates — Verify composition before processing
When in doubt, consult with a qualified safety professional or industrial hygienist before processing.
12. Electrical Safety
Operators should:
• Use properly grounded electrical service.
• Verify voltage compatibility.
• Inspect cables before operation.
• Never operate equipment with damaged wiring.
• Disconnect power before servicing equipment unless instructed otherwise by qualified personnel.
Only qualified individuals should perform electrical repairs.
13. Cooling System Safety
Many industrial laser systems utilize water-cooling systems.
Before operation:
• Verify coolant levels.
• Inspect hoses for leaks.
• Confirm adequate coolant circulation.
• Monitor cooling alarms.
• Never operate equipment with known cooling system failures.
14. Safe Work Area
Maintain a controlled work environment.
Recommended practices include:
• Restrict access to authorized personnel.
• Display laser warning signage.
• Provide adequate lighting.
• Keep floors free of trip hazards.
• Maintain clear emergency exits.
• Keep emergency stop controls accessible.
15. Operator Training
Operators should receive training regarding:
• Equipment operation
• Laser hazards
• Emergency shutdown procedures
• PPE selection
• Material hazards
• Fire prevention
• Routine inspection and maintenance
Refresher training should be conducted periodically.
16. Before Every Shift Safety Checklist
Use this checklist before beginning work each day:

If any unsafe condition exists, stop work immediately until corrected.

17. Emergency Procedures
If an unsafe condition occurs:
• Stop laser operation immediately.
• Activate the emergency stop if necessary.
• Disconnect power if safe to do so.
• Evacuate personnel when appropriate.
• Seek emergency medical attention for suspected eye injuries or serious burns.
• Report equipment malfunctions before returning the system to service.
Never continue operating equipment that appears damaged or malfunctioning.
18. Applicable Standards
Laser safety requirements may include applicable OSHA regulations, ANSI standards (such as ANSI Z136), local fire codes, environmental regulations, and other workplace safety requirements depending on your location and application.
Customers are responsible for determining and complying with all applicable laws, regulations, and workplace safety requirements.
